Intense feelings of fear, dizziness, nausea, trembling or shakiness, difficulty breathing, heart palpitations, chest pain, sweaty palms are just a few of the many physical, psychological, and emotional symptoms of anxiety.
"Control" is an acrylic painting that is aims to show the physical representation of what is feels like to have anxiety. There are many ways in which this mental illness has a control over one's life because it influences a person’s behaviour and the way in which they interact with the world. This control is represented through the hand squeezing the heart. This painting not only aims to show some of the physical symptoms of anxiety like chest pain and heart palpitations but it also shows some of the emotional symptoms such as constant feelings of fear and uneasiness.
It is important to talk about mental illnesses such as anxiety through things such as art and education, because although there has been a lot of progress in the way mental illnesses are perceived there is still a lot of development to be made in combatting the stigmatism behind mental illness. Thus, it is important to talk about these issues because the realization that anxiety is a mental illness and not the result of personal weakness, a character flaw or poor upbringing, must be made.
